Our story
How did everything start and why Portugal?
We had both travelled and lived abroad for quite some time but one night in 2013 we met in Sweden and things got serious fast.
Soon we started planning our first trip together and one year later we were heading to south America for 6 months of travel, studies and kitesurfing. By this time we had realised that we wanted to work together and turn our jobs into a lifestyle. Young and fearless we started talking about moving abroad for good, the big question was just how and where.
How do we start? We knew we wanted to work with tourism and we also liked to renovate so quite soon we decided to aim for a guesthouse. We made a saving strategy and contacted others likeminded to learn how they did to fulfill their dream.
Where would we live? Somewhere warm with a long tourism season, a small town with genuine people, great nature and a lot of outdoor activites. We share the passion for kitesurfing but we also like to try new things and stay active during the days without wind. At first we thought that we would have to move far away from the european border to find all these criterias but after 4 years we visited Portugal and fell in love with Alvor right away. It had everything we were looking for and on top of that close to the airport and easy for our scandinavian friends and family to visit.
One year later we had found our house, the Rooftop Guesthouse. It had now taken us five years of hard work to save, search and learn all the steps of the process. A lot of ups and downs and oh how we sometimes wished there where a manual to follow!
Our Rooftop Guesthouse is now fully renovated and we’re so excited to welcome all of you guests to this little fishing village and everything it has to offer!
Lots of love, Simon and Sofie
